The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Anambra State, Tobechukwu Nweke, SAN, has directed the Nigeria Police Force to investigate all complaints of gender-based disinheritance in the state and transmit the corresponding case files to the Ministry for prosecution. In an official memorandum dated September 26, 2026, the Attorney General affirmed that denying females their right to inherit property constitutes an offense under Section 22 of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Law, 2017 of Anambra State, punishable by up to four (4) years imprisonment. The Ministry has designated its Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) Unit to prosecute all reported violations under the Act, enforcing compliance with established Supreme Court jurisprudence outlawing discriminatory inheritance customs.
