Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, issued a statement on Wednesday announcing that President Tinubu has removed Maryam Sanda, who was sentenced to death in 2020 for the culpable homicide of her husband, Bilyaminu Bello, from the pardon list.
This decision was made in accordance with Section 175(1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which grants President Tinubu the power of prerogative of mercy. Onanuga noted that the updated list of beneficiaries was compiled after consultations with the Council of State and consideration of public opinion, culminating in the signing of relevant instruments.
The statement outlined that President Tinubu directed the removal of individuals convicted of severe crimes, including kidnapping, drug offenses, human trafficking, fraud, and illegal firearms possession or trafficking, from the list. Furthermore, those previously pardoned on the old list received reduced sentences.
