The Delta State Police Command had on Saturday the 23rd day of July, 2025 warned residents that indecent dressing will attract penalties under the stateโs Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law.
The Chairperson of FIDA (Nig.) Asaba Branch Ifeoma Iloba has expressed concerns regarding the recent pronouncement by the Nigeria Police, Delta State Command, on “indecent dressing.” According to the Chairperson, the pronouncement appears to be gender specific and may lead to victimization and human rights violations.
The FIDA Asaba Chairperson referenced the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law, Delta State 2020, which specifically defines the offence of indecent exposure as intentionally exposing one’s private parts wholly or partly in public. Emphasis was placed on the importance of upholding the law’s provisions and respecting the jurisdiction of the courts.
In a television program, “The Faculty,” aired on Delta TV, the Chairperson, Ifeoma Iloba, highlighted the need for the Police to engage in wider consultations with stakeholders on modalities for implementing the said provision in line with the spirit of the VAPP Law. This approach, she noted, would ensure that the law is enforced in a manner that is fair, just, and respectful of the rights of all individuals.
FIDA Asaba Branch encourages adherence to the rule of law and promotes a nuanced understanding of the VAPP Law, Delta State 2020, in its implementation.
