IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu has stated that he will defend himself after his lawyers were sacked by him.
Kanu confirmed this in court as he seeks to begin his defense against the terrorism charges brought against him by the Nigerian government. As his defense is set to start on Thursday, Kanu’s lead lawyer, Kanu Agabi, who is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, announced his withdrawal from the case. Agabi mentioned he is withdrawing alongside other SANs, including Onyechi Ikpeazu, Emeka Etiaba, Nunghe Mela Audu, Paul Erokoro, Uchenna Njoku, and others.
The trial judge, Justice James Omotosho, granted the lawyers’ application. When the judge asked Kanu, “Who will be your lawyer?” Kanu replied, “I will defend myself,” indicating that he does not require a lawyer. Justice Omotosho then ordered all the counsels representing Kanu, except for the SANs, to leave the courtroom.
