A 21-year-old man has become the first in New York to be cured of sickle cell anemia. For 21 years, Sebastien Beauzile suffered chronic pain from debilitating sickle cell anemia and now he is making medical history.
Since his treatment in late 2024, he has been free of the chronic pain and symptoms that previously characterized his life with the disease. This groundbreaking treatment modifies his own stem cells to produce healthy red blood cells, marking a major milestone in the treatment of the inherited blood disorder.
Beauzile received the Lyfgenia (lovotibeglogene autotemcel) gene therapy, which uses his own bone marrow stem cells to create normal red blood cells.
Congrats to him.
